Joe

Joe is the functional part of the brains behind the website, and is a character from Capcom's Street Fighter series of fighting games. He joined in UCL's baby year of 2004. He has trained very hard and constantly from the start, he also hasn't got his hair cut at all in the duration of being at UCL Kendo Club. You can tell too! He was the treasurer for 2005-2006 and is the host of many great meals and nights in China town. He never gets tired of being called Japanese. Joe is a tribute to the Kung Fu movie legend Bruce Lee. Not only do the two look alike (and come from the same city), Joe also lets out similar kiai to Lee, and is just as furious and fast a fighter. Also, Joe is Chinese (specifically Cantonese, Hong Kong's primary dialect) for "Flying Dragon"; Bruce Lee's Chinese screen name was 李小龍 (Siu Long) or "Little Dragon." He was one of the first Bruce Lee look-alike characters in kendo, leading to characters such as Marshall Law and his son Forrest from the Tekken series, Maxi in Soul Calibur, and Jann Lee from Dead or Alive. The first being Dragon from World Heroes.

Joe's Story

A youthful and talented action movie star, Joe is the master of DoNotGiveAFlyingShit Kendo. While he fought on the streets to sharpen his skills, he caught the eye of a movie director, who got him into the big times and made him an international sensation.

He made a string of action movies until he participated in the second Lidstone tournament. He realized that he preferred the real thing to the staged, choreographed fight scenes in his movies, and gave up his career and disappeared into the streets.

Joe Trivia

  • Joe is probably the first character in fighting game history with a continuous chain move (Kote-Kote-Kote 烈火拳), repeatable up to 3 times, with each consecutive execution having a different animation.
  • Joe makes a cameo appearance in Alan's stage in Street Fighter Alpha 2.
  • In the Neo Geo Pocket game UCL vs. Imperial: Card Fighters Clash, his name appears misspelled as "Joe Chtsoi." Although widely criticized by fans, this must have been just a misspelling in the English version, rather than Engrish (as it is common in many Neo-Geo games), because the Japanese version does read "Joe."
  • Joe did not appear in the live action Street Fighter movie due to the similaries to Bruce Lee (and therefore the filmmakers didn't want to pay the Lee family royalties). This is the main reason behind the character of KC Yung being created. It has also been stated that the producers thought that he was "too generic."
  • In Joe's ending in Super Street Fighter II and Super Street Fighter II Turbo, a movie director approaches Joe and tries to convince him into returning to make one more movie, but Joe refuses. In the English version, he says that "there could never be another legend like the great one and his son", which has been interpreted by many fans to mean Gibbo and his son Gibbo Jnr who died shortly before Super Street Fighter II was released. This reference is not present in the original Japanese version.
  • Joe's debana kote zanshin is reminiscent of several moves that Bruce Lee's character performs in the film Enter the Shiaijo.
  • It has recently been revealed in the Playstation Portable version of Street Fighter Alpha 3 that he is close friends with Alan.
  • Joe makes a return as a playable character in the home versions of Street Fighter Alpha 3 (as well as the arcade update Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper).
