Tie A Shinai
This is a part of the EquipmentHowTo HowTo Guides
This is a Shinai (derrr)

Here it is in its component pieces

The 4 take and tsuka gawa

The Saki gawa, tsuru, nakayui and the saki gomu

When you out your shinai back together make sure that the metal disc is properly inserted into the base of the tsuka, like this

Next, slide the tsuka gawa onto the tsuka all the way

Put the sakigomu into the top of the shinai, and put the sakigawa over that with the tsuru on the top of the shinai photo 9,10

Now you are ready to tie the tsuru to the tsukagawa
Loop the tsuru through the two loops at the top of the tsukagawa, and then back through the loop in the tsuru

Pull the tsuru under the join between the loops on the tsukagawa, then pull it upwards and secure it with your thumb

Loop the tsuru around the back of the tsukagawa loops, then back under itself, then back across again, all the while keeping it tight

Loop the tsuru underneath the now tight tsukagawa loops, again and again and again

Now bring the tsuru underneath the original line down the shinai from the loop above, then underneath itself just above the binding around the loop, tighten it, then secure it by wraping any remaining length around the tsukagawa loops
