Shinai

How to make your handle wider

A common problem afflicting many young men these days is a thin, er, sword handle. Bujt fear not young buck, you can fatten up your tsuka with the aid of some simple tools, and not a pump or tablet in sight!

For this you will need:

  • A Hacksaw
  • A shinai (der)
  • An extra tsukagawa that you no longer want/need
  • Some newspaper
  • Sand paper
  • A bowl of beans
  • A tin of chopped tomatos

Step 1

Discard the tin of tomatos, you didn't need them. Firstly here is a picture showing the length difference if you don't chop a little bit off the end of your shinai. This is why you need the hacksaw.

Step 2

Firstly, untie your shinai and seperate the take, and number them.

Step 3

You may need to smooth of the edges of the inside of your shinai, just in case the guy who put the sticky resin in to hold it together got a little glue-happy. Once done, make a mark for how much you need to chop off.

Step 4

Get the hacksaw out, and chop the bits you marked off the bottom of your take.

Step 5

Next, you will need to sand down the sharpened edges you have just made with the saw. If you don't these will eventually rip the bottom of your tsukagawa up rendering it useless.

Step 6

Once they are all done, slot them back together.

Step 7

Next, get your tsukagawa and your spare, and figure out how much you need to chop off the top so that they fit together (the one in the first picture is the right size already, so I butchered another one, just for you!) and then chop the top off as required.

Step 8

Slot your chopped tsukagawa on first, then put the one your wish to use on over that. If you have trouble getting it on, get both tsukagawa wet, this will help greatly, but you will need to leave it to dry, for at least 2 days.

Step 9

EAT THE BEANS! BEEEEEEEEEEANS!
