Shiai Terminology
This is part of the Beginners HowTo Guides
Once you get in there, everything just seems a hazy blur (at least, for the 30 seconds you last before losing 2-0....) and it can be difficult to remember all that japanese in the heat of the moment, so without further ado....
Shiai Terminology and What it means....
- Hajime - This means GO! GO! GO!
- Yame - Controversially, this means stop fighting, and return to your marker.
- Enchou, Hajime - Means "Extended Time, GO! GO! GO!"
- Wakare - Seperate to Chudan and toimaai (used in tsubazeriai)
- XXX-ari - used to indicate a point that has just been scord, ie men-ari when you have just been succesfully tonked on the nut. Sometimes you will hear "Ippon-ari", this is when a second hansoku has been awarded to make ippon for the other guy.
- Hansoku ikkai/nikai - 1st/2nd penalty. This is announced when both kendoka are at the starting marks with one or both of them having done something wrong, like go out of the area (Hello Sideshow) or drop their shinai, or any other such infringement of "The Rules".
- Nihonme - Used to restart the match after the first ippon.
- Shoubu - Used to restart the match after a second ippon from the other player, ie the score is now 1-1, so get on with it!
- Gougi - Used after stopping the match to tell you that the refs need a quiet word with each other. If this happens, put away your sword, take five steps back and wait in sonkyo until you are called back. The refs will usually be discussing what they had for lunch, or the mileage of their Volvo.
- Shoubu-ari - Used to announce the winner of a match.
- Hikiwake - used to announce a draw. Shame on you.
Other things you might hear:
- Hansoku - Penalty, a half point against you. Doesn't count towards the result unless you get a second, which makes ippon.
- Jougai - this means "out of the area" and is used to describe the hansoku of that nature
- Shinai hanashi - means "let go of the shinai" and is as above
- Ippon gachi - winning by one point
- Nihon gachi - winning by two points
- Hansoku gachi - winning with Hansoku (hello again Sideshow)
- Enchou - an extension after normal time has elapsed, with no limit
- Daihyousen - A representatives match, used when a team competition is drawn after the captains match.
That'll do for now. When I remember more I'll bang them up!
