Putting On A Tenugui
Putting on a Tenugui
Once keiko has started and you have done mokuso, the sempai in charge will shout MEN TSUKE which means put your helmet on (hurr hurr!). Before you put your men on your noggin, you have to put your doo rag, or tenugui on. The tenugui soaks up a great deal of sweat and stops an amount of chaffing, so its worth doing properly!
Step 1:
Hold the tenugui out in front of you as shown, making sure there are no big creases or twists in it:

Step 2:
Draw it back tightly over your head to the bottom of your skull:

Step 3:
Still holding onto the corners, bring them both forward, still tightly, and swap hands. Note: at this point it is up to you if you pin your ears in or put the tenugui behind them. I have ears that make me look like a trophy, so I rather self conciously hold mine back. If you take the piss, or stare at me in keiko next time, I will beat the living crap out of you.

Step 4:
One at a time, bring those corners further round, still pulling tightly. Secure the first corner by wrapping the second one around slightly over it, so that it can't move when you let go. (I'll see if we can get a close up picture to illustrate what I mean)

Step 5:
Finally, draw the remainder away from your face and up over your head, like an errant lock of hair, and you are sorted. If it doesn't stay together at this point then pay more attention to securing the first croner in place when you draw the second one around (from step 4)

And you are now ready to don your battle helmet, gifted from the god of war himself (or Imai if you bought it over the internet...)
